Medieval Experience

Kate and her father Albert in the Athenry Heritage CentreFamilies will be thrilled with the Athenry Heritage Centre’s ‘Medieval Experience’. Step back into a world of Kings and Queens with the centre’s medieval costumes. Be part of history as you dress up as the Lord or Lady of the Manor. Let your son become a Knight or your daughter a Princess, there are many designs to choose from, so all the family can enjoy this living history experience and it’s a great photo opportunity too!

Your fun filled tour is led by an experienced tour guide who brings you on a 500 year journey which includes interactive exhibits, models of the town, the market square and the medieval dungeon.

This journey is complete with Have A Go Archery, a great opportunity to discover your inner Robin Hood!

The ‘Medieval Experience’ is designed for families with children of all ages. Mums and Dads will be thrilled with the centre's activities and children can relish being part of history with the medieval costumes. Your tour guide brings you on a journey where history comes alive and makes learning fun!

Discover the Anglo-Norman history of Athenry as your guide introduces you to the de Birmingham family, the Lords of the Manor. Experience life for the rich and the poor; see the weapons used in battle and enter the dungeon (if you dare) for the dark side of medieval life.

Feel the power when you sit on the throne or become the executioner of family or friends. The stage is set for a memorable visit to the best preserved medieval town in Ireland.

Complete your family visit with the heritage centre's Have-A-Go archery activity and discover your hidden Robin Hood.

This exciting safe activity is the ideal moment to experience something new but with an ancient history. The centre's archery instructors provide everything you need to enjoy this popular sport. The Have-A-Go archery is an all-weather activity and it adds a competitive spirit for your family or group tour.

An additional feature of the garden area is the wooden maze. Try not to lose yourself as it twists and turns from end to end. The clue is to enter the stone tower as it’s the only way out! Relax in the picnic area and enjoy some quality family time.

A visit to Athenry wouldn’t be complete without seeing its ancient castle which is just across the road or bring the children to the park and enjoy the facilities there.
The ‘Medieval Experience’ is available every day and each tour lasts about 90 minutes.
